Halloween 2016
Happy Halloween! ?
Tonight is the night for the ghosts and goblins to come and visit our houses. They will arrive at the door, ring the bell, say “trick or treat” and we will grab from a big bowl of candy to give them the treat. It’s fun to see all of the kids dressed in costumes running from house to house to get the candy. I remember those nights when my dad would walk in the street with us while we went to the houses to get the treats.
Witches, ghosts and goblins will be out and about haunting the night. Along with the vampires, mummies and skeletons. According to history.com, here is an excerpt about the History Of Halloween,
Straddling the line between fall and winter, plenty and paucity, life and death, Halloween is a time of celebration and superstition. It is thought to have originated with the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, when people would light bonfires and wear costumes to ward off roaming ghosts.
Did you know that one-quarter of the candy purchased annually is purchased for Halloween? No wonder the kids make out like bandits when they bring all of that candy home. How about when we brought our candy home? Our parents had to go through it and make sure that all of the wrappers were in tact and that no one had tampered with anything. Sometimes didn’t you wonder if our parents really wanted to get first choice from our hauls?
There’s a lady who lives down the street from us who really decorates her house for Halloween like a lot of people do with their houses for Christmas. It has spooky lights, sounds and characters included. It is one that people will come to our neighborhood just to drive by and see it. She dresses up on Halloween night to hand out candy to the kids. I think it is great to see how much fun she has with the holiday.
Did all of you get your annual viewing of It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown? Even as an adult, I love to watch that show. Watching Linus sit out in the pumpkin patch waiting for the Great Pumpkin. I admire his faith in the Halloween spirit. When I was growing up, we didn’t have VCRs and DVRs to record and watch it whenever we wanted. We had to watch the TV and the TV Guide to find out when it would be on and then set aside the time to watch it. Oh how things have changed!
Enjoy your night of haunting everyone!
